About Santo Domingo

Historia
Born in 1946, the Dominican Republic is an interesting blend of history and a unique Caribbean environment. Santo Domingo, the capital city, dates back to the 1490 and has some of the oldest structures in the Western Hemisphere. The district Colonial Zone, designated by the UNESCO like a World Heritage Site in 1990, boasts one of the best preserved and largest 16th century colonial complexes in the world. Today, Santo Domingo mixes is colonial heritage, with a bustling contemporary city. The city boasts a varied cultural, restaurant and sport scene, and is gateway for accessing the country’s beaches and lush landscape.

The Port of Santo Domingo is located at the mouth of the Ozama River. Its location at the center of the Caribbean is well suited for flexible itinerary planning as well as for easy transfers due to excellent road and airport infrastructure within the Santo Domingo region. The port is suitable for both turnaround transit calls.

The port’s renovation is part of a major waterfront redevelopment project, aimed at integrating the port area and the Colonial Zone to create an attractive destination for cruise ships, yachts and high-end tourism. Supported by legislation approved in 2005, the project, developed by the Sans Souci Group also includes the development of a new sport marina and a 122 acre mixed- leisure real estate development adjacent to the port.

Port renovation started in late 2005, and includes the renovation of the Don Diego Terminal (completed in December 2006) and the building of the new Sans Souci Terminal, witch will be operational by mid- June 2008, as it welcomes its first tumaroud operation with Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas.
